Community Marketing Update — September 2010
After experiencing years of steady population growth that helped push the Bismarck-Mandan metro area over the 100,000-mark, yet still facing challenges in attracting the retail and service amenities desired by residents, the community of Mandan, North Dakota, is taking steps to strengthen overall community development efforts.
Forward thinking leaders from business, government and education collaborated in 2009 on a strategic visioning process. The resulting plan has since been dubbed Mandan Tomorrow.Looking at research conducted as part of the planning process, steering committee members recognized Mandan's lack of a strong reputation makes it tough to compete head-to-head with our better-known neighbor. Research pointed to the need for a unified identity to help Mandan attract positive attention and stimulate economic growth.
The Mandan Tomorrow — Leadership, Pride and Image Committee was assigned the responsibility of developing a community marketing theme. Volunteer members created the 'Made in Mandan' logo and crafted a community marketing plan to shine a light on community assets while allowing for tremendous flexibility in identifying Mandan with economic development, residential opportunities, and tourism. The 'Made in Mandan' community theme has been formally adopted by the Mandan City Commission, Park Board, and School Board.
